The University of Alaska Museum has just opened two professional
positions, one for a systematic entomologist, and one for a database
manager.  They are detailed below:

INTERIM CURATOR OF ENTOMOLOGY AND POSTDOCTORAL RESEARCHER

     The University of Alaska Museum (UAM) at the University of Alaska
Fairbanks (UAF) seeks qualified applicants for a Postdoctoral Researcher
and Interim Curator of Entomology.
     The appointee is expected to consolidate and curate a developing
entomological collection focusing on Arctic taxa and to conduct research
in evolutionary biology and entomological systematics with an emphasis on
the Arctic. The position is central to the development of UAM^s Arctic
Archival Observatory program. It is a three-year position, renewable
annually, after which a search for a tenure-track faculty position will be
conducted. 
	Available facilities at UAF and in the associated Department of
Biology and Wildlife and the Institute of Arctic Biology
(http://mercury.bio.uaf.edu) include: core DNA laboratory, spatial ecology
laboratory, supercomputer, a modern greenhouse, and the Bonanza Creek
Long-Term Ecological Research site.
     Applicants are preferred who have experience in managing and using
traditional museum collections, a background in comparative biology and
the theory of phylogenetic systematics, and an ability to effectively
interact with a variety of colleagues and agencies. A Ph.D. is mandatory.

JOB TITLE: Programmer, Analyst
GRADE: 79, $1,572 Biweekly

TYPICAL DUTIES: The Arctic Archival Observatory (AAO) at the University of
Alaska Museum (Fairbanks, AK, USA) is an early part of the U.S. National
Science Foundation's "National Ecological Observatory
Network" (NEON).  The AAO will provide an archive of samples for use in
investigations of environmental change.  Extensive information on the
nature and use of hundreds of thousands of samples will be available from
the AAO/Museum web site. The incumbent will administer and expand a
comprehensive database of scientific collections.  This will involve
moving existing PC and Mac databases into the system, development of
database structures for new collections, development of applications for
collection-management and public clients, general system administration,
and working closely with a diversity of scientists and students. The AAO
will collaborate with various "distributed knowledge" initiatives, and is
involved in developing shared applications with other institutions.  These
are major regional scientific collections from northwestern North America,
a region that will experience early effects of global climate change. We
seek a person committed to the development of the Internet as a deep
resource for educational and scientific endeavors. 

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: Prior experience with relational databases,
object-oriented programming (Java and/or C++), and Unix system
administration. The system is running in Oracle on Solaris 7.5 using the
Versata business logic server and Java application-development
environment.  It is a near-clone of the Museum of Vertebrate Zoology's
system at the University of California
(www.mip.berkeley.edu/mvz/cis/). PREFERRED: Experience with Oracle, PERL
and Apache.  Knowledge of biological-collection databases.
EDUCATION: Bachelor of Science (minimum) in Computer Science, or
equivalent professional experience.
