We're using Biota here for a fungal herbarium. Although it has some
fields we'll never use, and others that we've coopted for different
purposes than intended, overall we like it. We are happy to overlook
its quirks when we consider what a headache it would've been to
develop and maintain our own relational application in Filemaker or
ilk. (I should add that what I call its "quirks" are really just
concepts from other disciplines that are hard to apply in mycology).

We use Biota in conjunction with Filemaker Pro, actually, because FMP
currently has much better presentation features for printing custom
labels, shipping notices, and the like.
