Hi Lisa,

We've done some nice maps with Surfer
(http://www.goldensoftware.com/frames/productsframe.htm),there is a
downloadable demo which allows you to build maps but not print or save.

We use it to do basic point maps like
http://www.agric.wa.gov.au:7000/ento/_fpclass/agird5.jpg or more complex
contour maps like
http://www.agric.wa.gov.au:7000/AGIRD/images/fencmos%20contour.gif

I have seen it produce some really nice contour maps with stored product
moth trapping grid data taken from the inside of warehouses.  It allowed
infestations to be pinpointed very easily.

It's a verysophsiticated package which costs US$600 that handles scientific
and engineering applications.
