General Overview:  The UC Botanical Garden’s internationally renowned 
collection is an important scientific and educational resource for 
scholars, students and the community (http://www.mip.berkeley.edu/garden/). 
As a museum of living plants representing the world's major floras, the 
Garden advances understanding of plant ecology, diversity and evolution, 
contributes to the conservation of natural habitats and species, and 
enhances public appreciation of plant life.
With the establishment of its Center for the Study of Plant Conservation, 
the Garden is poised to take on new responsibilities in plant conservation 
research, with a focus on Mediterranean climate floras.  At the same time, 
in its role as a member institution in the Berkeley Natural History Museums 
(BNHM) consortium, the Garden is expanding its emphasis on ethnobotany of 
Pacific Rim cultures.
The Garden plays an important role in undergraduate education, and also 
offers a variety of K-12 educational programs and lifelong learning 
opportunities.  An extensive volunteer program provides numerous 
opportunities for supporters to be involved in the Garden. Fundraising, 
marketing, and revenue-generating activities are becoming increasingly 
important for the Garden’s budget.
