Dear colleagues,

For many years the University of Kansas has offered a nonthesis
magisterial degree in Historical Administration and Museum Studies, the
MHAMS program. I am pleased to announce that only yesterday the
University approved the addition of a geology track (primarily
paleontology) to the MHAMS program. The purpose of the degree program
is to prepare curators and collection managers to work in museums and
archival collections. The curriculum includes six core courses on
topics that includes, among others, preparation of exhibits, developing
public-education programs, and the management of museum information. In
addition to the core courses, which all MHAMS students take, students in
the geology track will take courses in paleontology, in sedimentology,
and in related tracks in the MHAMS program, such as anthropology,
natural history, and biology.

Finally, students participate in an apprenticeship that is intended to
give them experience with a wide variety of museums, such as natural
history, anthropology, and fine arts. Museums are springing up all
around us, and people have begun to realize that museums are not merely
rooms filled with curious items. They play an important archival and
educational role. As for the geology track in the MHAMS program, here
is a career for a paleontologist with a masters degree.

Those interested in seeking admission to the program should contact me
for more information.

Sincerely

Roger L. Kaesler
