Specimen collections in the northeast:

As part of a USGS project in cooperation with the National Park Service I
am trying to locate vascular plant and vertebrate voucher specimens for the
Northeast Temperate Region parks: Acadia NP, Saint-Gaudens NHS,
Marsh-Billings NHP, Saugus Iron Works NHS, Minute Man NHP, Weir Farm NHS,
Saratoga NHP, Roosevelt-Vanderbilt NHP, Morristown NHP and 4
Coastal-Barrier Island parks: Gateway NRA, Cape Cod NS, Assateague NS, and
Fire Island NS. These are all within the northeastern US except for
Assateague which is in MD/VA.This information will be used to document
wildlife and plants collected in these parks and is an important source of
information for the Inventory and Monitoring Program currently underway at
the National Park Service. I have been able to find information about most
large collections from the Systematics and Collections Database of Research
Systematics (National Biological Information Infrastructure) and the Index
Herbariorum (New York Botanical Garden), but many of the small collections
in small colleges, universities, and conservation groups are not on these
lists even though they may have vertebrate or plant collections. If anyone
knows of
an institution or are at an institution in the northeast, MD, or VA with
collections of fish, herps, mammals, birds and vascular plants I would
appreciate it if
you would e-mail me directly at agilbert at usgs.gov (or by mail to the
address below) the following info:

Name of institution/collection
Address
Name of person to contact about collection
email address and phone number of contact
Taxa represented (fish, mammals, birds, herps, all verts, plants if
possible as well)
Distribution of collection (local, New England, Northeast, Worldewide,
etc.)
# in collection broken down by taxa or total if not known
Is it electronically catalogued (~% digital)
Is it searchable

Please send as much information as you have, but at the very least names
and contacts would be greatly appreciated. Please feel free to forward this
e-mail to someone who may not be on this list but may know about a
collection in this area.

Thanks for your help!

Sincerely,
Andrew Gilbert
