NEW CONSERVATION COURSE AT SFSU:

Museum Studies 760:  Conservation of Natural History Collections

* a course designed for conservators and collections managers who work 
with all types of materials in art, history, anthropology, and science
museums

Day/Time:  Tuesdays, 4-7 pm

Dr. Jean DeMouthe, Sr. Colls. Mgr., California Academy of Sciences

*  a 3-unit course on the preventative conservation of natural materials
found in all museums of art, history, and science, from traditional
collections of plants and animals to materials included in artwork (incl.
contemporary art), historical objects, or anthropological specimens.

Preliminary course outline:
* physical & optical properties of materials
* conservation techniques, examples & demonstrations
* organics: plants
* organics: animals
* inorganics: rocks & common minerals
* inorganics: metals, gems, meteorites, ornamental stones
* composite specimens & man-made materials
* associated & derived collections (slides, frozen specimens, library
	materials, photographs)
* record-keeping, database issues & designs, photo-documentation, condition
	reports
* conservation of specimens on exhibit or loan
* field trip
