POSITION ANNOUNCEMENT

Ichthyologist at the Assistant or Associate Professional Scientist 
level, Illinois Natural History Survey, Center for Biodiversity 
(State funded, full-time).

The Illinois Natural History Survey (INHS), a division of the 
Department of Natural Resources, is an Affiliated Agency of the 
University of Illinois located on the Urbana-Champaign campus.  The 
scientists within the Center for Biodiversity conduct research on a 
broad range of questions concerning biodiversity and management of 
biological resources.  Scientists at the Illinois Natural History 
Survey have full access to campus facilities and resources and may 
hold affiliate appointments in university departments, supervise 
graduate students, and have opportunities for teaching.

Job description: The ichthyologist will conduct research on 
systematics of non-game freshwater fishes with applicability to 
Illinois and the midwestern United States.  Research focus must 
include one or more of the following: molecular and/or morphological 
phylogenetics, taxonomy, phylogeography, or conservation biology.  An 
emphasis on collections-based research is preferred.  The 
ichthyologist is expected to publish research results in scientific 
literature, obtain external funding, curate the INHS ichthyological 
collection, participate in education and outreach activities, serve 
on INHS/DNR committees, and interact with colleagues and students at 
the University of Illinois.

Qualifications: Requires a Ph.D. (by starting date) in ichthyology or 
related field with emphasis on one or more of the above research 
areas and a demonstrated organismal focus. Research experience and 
interests that complement research programs in the Center for 
Biodiversity, and that can be applied to biological issues in 
Illinois and the Midwest, are preferred.  The ichthyologist must 
possess and maintain a record of frequent publication in 
peer-reviewed, nationally recognized scientific journals; demonstrate 
abilities to plan, attract funding for, conduct, supervise, and 
evaluate research activities; and have an affinity for cooperative or 
interdisciplinary research with other INHS Centers, other units of 
the Illinois Department of Natural Resources, and academic 
institutions such as the University of Illinois.  The position 
requires interpersonal skills and the ability to work cooperatively 
with other scientists, technicians, and support staff.  The 
ichthyologist must be able to make sound judgements and articulate 
professional opinions in writing and in person to granting agencies, 
the scientific community, and the general public.   Post-doctoral 
experience is preferred for appointment as Assistant Professional 
Scientist; required for Associate Professional Scientist.  For 
appointment as Associate Professional Scientist, the incumbent must 
also have received tenure from an academic institution or passed the 
equivalent promotion review at a relevant government or research 
agency, or demonstrate equivalent qualifications.

Salary:  $45,000 - $47,000 (Assistant Professional Scientist); 
$53,000 - $55,000 (Associate Professional Scientist)
