CURATOR OF ZOOLOGY
Candidate Profile
The Manitoba Museum of Man and Nature, a world class facility which preserves, presents and encourages the discovery of Manitoba's heritage through its galleries, exhibits, research, collections and publications, invites applications for the position of Curator of Zoology.
Reporting to the Director of Research, Collections & Exhibitions, the incumbent is required to perform advanced curatorial work with considerable independence of action guided by the Manitoba Museum's mandate, policies and guidelines. The position serves as the primary knowledge resource in the broad discipline (Zoology) and as the specialized knowledge source in one or more of its subdisciplines such as mammalogy, ornithology, and invertebrates. The position has overall responsibility for developing and implementing research and collecting plans through the acquisition (fieldwork or other means), documentation, preparation, and maintenance of specimens within this area. The incumbent is required to promote knowledge and awareness of Manitoba's natural history through the selection of themes, specimens and preparation of label copy for the development of galleries and temporary exhibitions; support to public and school programming; and consultation and advice to the general public. The creation of primary research for publication is also an expectation of the position. In addition, the incumbent will support the ongoing development of the Museum by participating in fundraising endeavors, grant writing, providing information through various media, supervising and training volunteers, interns and research assistants as necessary.
Education/Experience
· Graduate degree with extensive knowledge and skills in the area of specialty requiring a command of complex theory and principles.
· Two to four years related experience and education.
· Experience in conducting primary field and laboratory research and providing results through lectures, publications and other products.
· Experience in processing specimens including issuance of appropriate receipts, loans and maintenance on existing collections.
Knowledge/Abilities
· Broad knowledge of Manitoba's biology, zoology, ecology and biogeography and an interest in global bio-informatics.
· Knowledge of specimen preparation and care, collections management and conservation standards.
· Working knowledge of a variety of computer software applications including word processing, databases and collection management software.
· Knowledge of museum operations, policy and procedures.
· Sound knowledge in systematics.
· Strong interpersonal skills.
· Supervise and train volunteers, interns, research assistants and others as necessary.
· Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
· Ability to work independently and as a team member.
