GAC NEWFOUNDLAND SECTION FIELD TRIP 2002
***************************************************

LIFE AFTER SNOWBALL EARTH : The Mistaken Point Biota and The Origins of Animals

Leaders: Dr. Guy Narbonne (Queen's University) and Rodrigo
Sala(Memorial University).

Dates: Friday October 4th (PM) to Sunday October 6th (PM), 2002

Details: This year's field trip will examine two very important
aspects of the geology of the Avalon Peninsula. It will commence with
an examination of unusual rocks that record the presence of glacial
conditions during the late Neoproterozoic (the so-called "Snowball
Earth"). This will be followed by a full-day visit to the
world-famous Mistaken Point Ecological Reserve, which contains
remarkable and unique Precambrian fossils. It will conclude with
visits to other fossiliferous Precambrian rocks south of St. John's,
and a visit to the renowned "Colony of Avalon" archeological site.
Leaders Guy Narbonne and Rodrigo Sala will inform us about late
Precambrian sedimentary environments, the Snowball Earth theory, and
the origins of animal life. The trip will involve two nights in
Trepassey, and some moderate hiking activity within the Ecological
Reserve. All interested parties, regardless of technical background,
are most welcome to participate. Spaces may be limited.

Cost: TBA, depending on details of logistics and subsidies. However,
we expect that the cost will be << $150 CDN per person, double
occupancy, including accommodations, transportation and food.
Participants who can provide a vehicle holding 4 or more people for
the trip may be eligible for a discount and/or a mileage refund.
