Employment Opportunity - Director, Collections Services
The Canadian Museum of Nature is Canada's national museum of the natural sciences based in Ottawa. The Museum strives to connect people with nature by initiating and contributing to national programmes of research, collections and public education. Researchers identify new species, explain changes in our environment, anticipate risks to biodiversity and contribute to solutions to health and resource issues. CMN manages a national collection of some 10 million items in the areas of botany, vertebrates, invertebrates and earth sciences. The Museum's exhibitions, education programmes and Web products engage and inform people about the natural world and human dependence and impact upon it.
As a member of the Management Team, the Director contributes to the development and implementation of the strategic direction of the CMN. He/She manages the participation of Collections Services staff in projects across the Museum to ensure the success of the CMN in achieving its mission and vision. The Director of Collection Services, plans, directs and controls the human, monetary and physical resources of the Collection Services Division to meet Museum objectives and ensures the appropriate development, safety and use of the scientific collection. The incumbent serves as a link between the CMN and the professional scientific and museum communities and leads or participates in a variety of projects in collaboration with the larger community in fulfillment of CMN's service to Canada.
The successful candidate will have a post-graduate degree in a related field. The individual will bring extensive senior collections management experience in a similar role, preferably within a heritage or scientific-based organization, as well as experience working or networking with other museums, government departments, and national and international natural history organizations. The candidate must work well in a team environment and be comfortable with a collaborative, multi-disciplinary approach to projects. Knowledge of both English and French is representative of the working environment.
