I'm sure most of you have heard rumors about the University of Nebraska
budget cut proposal to eliminate all research divisions of the University of
Nebraska State Museum, including all staff and functions of the Division of
Vertebrate Paleontology. These are not mere rumors. While technically
still a "proposal", elimination of the Division is a virtually certainty
unless our professional colleagues as well as the people of Nebraska can
convince the powers-that-be to save the Museum.

Those of us who, on March 13, 2003, received our official letters of
termination from the University (all curators, collection managers,
preparators, artist, secretary) can attest that this is more than
sabre-rattling by the administration. In less than 90 days, barring a
miracle, UNSM as we know it will cease to exist.

We have posted some information about the budget cuts and how they will
impact the Museum, as well as a list of people to whom you may write letters
of support if you so choose. Visit our web page at:

http://www-museum.unl.edu/research/vertpaleo/vertpaleo.html

and follow the logical links.

I know that the magnitude of current world events overshadows our plight,
but please take a moment to send a letter in support of the Research
Divisions and the Division of Vertebrate Paleontology specifically.

Letters arriving by March 31 will be most effective.

Many thanks,

Gregory Brown
on behalf of the UNSM Vertebrate Paleontology Staff
