We have cabinets with non-recessed handles on compacters.  The carriages
have bumpers, the depth of which compensate for the depth of the handles.

 You might want to consider whether the cabinets have recessed handles or 
locks.   This may become an issue if you are considering compact storage 
in your future.   It would be a shame to purchase new cabinetry that 
could not be retrofitted onto carriages if the need arose.
