Conservation of Fossil, Mineral and Rock Collections Workshop
Note: This is a two-day workshop.

The Conservation of Fossil, Mineral and Rock Collections workshop provides
participants with skills and knowledge needed to improve the care and
conservation of fossil, mineral and rock collections. The principle goals of
the workshop are to provide participants abilities to document the condition
of earth science specimens, recognize active deterioration and vulnerable
objects and situations, understand the implications of preparation methods
for the long-term stability of specimens, and construct appropriate mounts
and maintain environments suitable for preservation.

Teaching methods include lectures to convey detailed technical knowledge,
group discussions to explore difficult issues e.g., ethics of treatments),
individual and group hands-on activities to provide practice in executing
manual techniques, and documentation exercises in collections to practice
and sharpen newly learned observation skills. By the end of the workshop,
participants will be able to provide basic care for earth science
collections and to recognize situations that require further evaluation or
expert intervention. Specifically, participants will:

*	appreciate the scope of and uses for geological collections
*	understand the effects of collection and preparation techniques on
values and their long-term stability of specimens
*	recognize geological materials suffer distinctive kinds of damage in
response to preparation methods, handling, use and the environment
*	examine and document key features for assessing the condition of
fossil, mineral and rock specimens
*	create appropriate physical mounts and preservation environments for
safely storing and displaying fossil, mineral and rock specimens.

Participant manuals including appended off prints of technical papers,
samples of materials will be distributed.
