[NHCOLL-L:2510] cleaning taxidermy birds

Happy new year to all,

I have been asked to suggest a couple of methods for cleaning bird 
mounts held by a small university zoology department.  These are 
taxidermy mounts which are used for display, not for handling.  The 
collection includes a number of 19th century mounts complimentary to 
material held by our programme in Dublin.  We are currently working 
with the department in question to develop some policy for long-term 
care for their collection.  In the meantime, the department has a 
keen (but inexperienced) technician who would like to start some 
surface cleaning for aesthetic purposes.
Suggestions??
