Museum Building: Mid-Winter Symposium Feb 24-26, Washington DC
This symposium is for all types of museums (art to zoo) that are considering
expansion, renovation and new building.
** Also featured in the symposium are 2 back-to-back sessions (practicums),
organized by Bobbie Faul-Zeitler, on Friday, February 25, on museums, zoos
and gardens that are "going green" in building design, including needs
related to older buildings, landmarks and historic structures. These
sessions will focus on such elements as: defining green buildings and
sustainable design; integrating high-efficiency mechanical systems, natural
lighting, renewable energy, and exhibits with nontoxic materials; using
exterior features such as green roofs and water gardens (to "clean" and
reuse waste water); considering costs, best practices, and how to get
started. The presenters are museum officials, architects, designers and
funders who have helped develop and complete museum projects.
** Below is a description of the 2 1/2 day symposium, which is being
coordinated through the Mid-Atlantic Association of Museums, with several
host museums in Washington DC, and with the International Council of
Museums.
To register today, and get the best price, you may decide to become an
individual member -- and sign up now for the conference.

Announcement from Mid-Atlantic Association of Museums
This symposium is for architects, museum leaders, planners, project
managers, technical experts, and all those who plan or implement new
construction, renovation, or expansion projects for museums.
We have created an interactive and accessible menu of topics, museum
projects, and discussion leaders for a wide audience. Whether your
institution is a small historic site under renovation, a mid-sized art
museum planning an expansion, or a large children's museum building a new
facility, this symposium will provide you the opportunity to:
** Better understand the process of planning, implementing, and surviving
new construction, renovation, or expansion projects.
** Examine case studies, current trends, topical issues, and specific
projects related to building projects across a broad range of museum sizes
and scales, budgets, scope of building projects, diversity of disciplines,
and collecting vs. non- collections-holding institutions.
** Actively discuss museum building projects with other museum
professionals, architects, planners, project managers, and technical experts
to better inform the process of building.
** Access resources for architectural firms, consultants, museum projects,
and museum leaders through the Building Museums Resource Guide and Yellow
Pages
We hope you'll join us for one of the best programs about museum
architecture. Please contact MAAM offices with any questions about how to
register at programs at midatlanticmuseums.org or phone (410) 223-1194.
