Web version of Parks Canada Descriptive and Visual Dictionary

CHIN and Parks Canada are collaborating to create a Web version of the
Parks Canada Descriptive and Visual Dictionary. Based on the bilingual
"Canadian Parks Service Classification System for Historical Collections
(which is itself based on Chenhall's "Nomenclature for Museum Cataloguing
"), the Visual Dictionary allows researchers or cataloguers to identify an

object by name, definition, or illustration. The Visual Dictionary is
still under development by Parks Canada, but the sections that thave been
completed (including categories 1, 2, and 3 - for Structures, Furnishings,

and Personal Artifacts) will be provided on the CHIN Web site as a tool to

assist cataloguers and researchers. In addition to providing Web access
to the work that has already been completed, the project will also make
accessible the "work in progress" on the remainder of the categories:
Tools and Equipment for Materials, Tools and Equipment for Science and
Technology, Tools and Equipment for Communication, Distribution and
Transportation Artifacts, Communication Communication Artifacts, and
Recreational Artifacts. The Web version of the Parks Visual Dictionary
will be useful to a wide range of museums with history and ethnology
collections, and is expected to be available on the CHIN Web site by fall
of 2005. For further information, contact Heather Dunn at CHIN
(hdunn at chin.gc.ca).
