COLLECTION MANAGER/REGISTRAR
Miami Museum of Science & Planetarium, Miami, FL

SUMMARY:
The Collection Manager/Registrar oversees the daily operations of collection
development and implements collection care, maintenance, safety,
documentation and use.  This position works collaboratively in a creative
environment and contributes to the development of a full range of museum
exhibitions through collection-related activities.
 
RESPONSIBILITIES:
 
* Updates, reviews, and implements collection policies and procedures. 
 
* Represent collection-related issues at an institutional level such as
Integrated Pest Management, ambient conditions, security, safety and health
issues. 
 
* Filters requests of acquisitions and de-accessions as point person to the
Collection Council. 
 
* Maintains legal documents, histories of use, and physical histories of
permanent/education collection objects/specimens. 
 
* Responsible for the installation and handling of all objects and artifacts
in temporary or permanent possession of the Miami Museum of Science and
Planetarium; supervises packaging, crating or casework to transport or
display artifacts. 
 
* Determines and performs methods and processes for preservation and
conservation of objects/specimens; executes long-term related projects. 
 
* Represents the collection through public tours, collaborative projects
with other institutions and inquiries regarding object/specimen
identification. 
 
* Manages the daily operations of collection management, which includes the
cataloging and inventory of object/specimens, long-range planning, budget
management and artifact registration, management and security. 
 
* Maintains archives. 
 
* Manages photographic services to the collection: supervising collection
photography.
 
* Assists in writing, preparing, and editing grant proposals for special
projects as appropriate. 
 
* Participates in development of exhibit projects with an eye toward
collection-relevant issues.  Oversees and encourages daily use of the
collection for exhibits and programs. 
 
* Manages the administrative operations of the collections, which includes
long-range planning and budget management. 
 
* Assists in the annual budget planning process and regularly monitors
expenditures. Oversees purchasing and invoices for all materials necessary
for collection care.



* Responsible for the installation and handling of all objects and artifacts
in temporary or permanent possession of the Museum; supervises packaging,
crating and casework to transport or display artifacts. 
 
* Assists in writing, preparing and editing grant proposals for special
projects as appropriate. 
 
* Prepares rate structures for loans of artifacts/specimens as well as
photographic services. 
 

MINIMUM JOB REQUIREMENTS:
Bachelor's degree in library or museum science with one to three years of
experience directly related to the duties and responsibilities specified.
 
 
SALARY RANGE:
$32,000 - $35,000
