Job Description

 

Date:            October 26, 2006

Job Title:          Collections Manager 

Department:          Anthropology

 

Reports to:          Head of Collections Management, Anthropology

Supervises:          Interns, volunteers, and term employees on
grant-funded projects

 

Education:     Bachelor's degree in anthropology, or experience with
anthropology collections is required

 

Experience:    Two-three years museum experience strongly desired.  Good
organizational skills, attention to detail, in-depth knowledge of
accepted museum collections management practices and procedures
required.  Familiarity with standard word-processing, collections
databases, Filemaker Pro, and other software packages required.

 

Schedule:      Full-time (35 hours per week); Monday-Friday.  After
hours and weekend hours may be required for special events, or visits by
researchers.  Travel may be required as a museum representative for
various purposes.

 

Applicable physical capabilities: Must be able to work with artifacts
and records for 

long hours in storage areas.  Examination of artifacts frequently
demands stooping, kneeling, bending, and climbing a ladder.  Job
requires transport of objects, shelving, and carts.

 

 


Duties and Responsibilities


 

The Department of Anthropology at The Field Museum is known for its
outstanding collections from North America, Africa, Pacific, Asia, South
America, Latin America, and other areas. The collections manager is
responsible for systematic and project-based inventory, collections
organizing and movement in storage areas, assisting with grant writing
to acquire funds for new projects, and supervision of volunteers,
interns, and other employees.  He/she may be required to work with human
remains.  In conjunction with the appropriate Anthropology Curator, the
Head of Collections Management, and staff the collections manager will
work to implement collections-based priorities and work with staff
members from other divisions and departments, including Exhibitions,
Photo Archives, and Education.  Additional responsibilities include
behind-the-scenes tours, Member's Night participation, and other special
events as needed.  Applications are welcome from candidates with diverse
