below you will find the info from Mr. Suzuki about the hotels that I will be staying in Japan and their phone numbers. I will also go to their websites in the fullness of time to get more info about electricity, exercising, internet, etc. Thought I'd send you the whole thing so that you could get an idea of the general gist of things.
I sure wish you could be going with me, but I guess I'm stuck with quiet little Ms. Ibaraki.
love, c

Dear Jaclyn:
I am still sufferring from FIM Disease that flared up yesterday but it should get better (until another reocurrence)
Mr. Hatayama has already contacted Mr. Suzuki and herewith enclosed is Christine's hotel schedule. He just called me (he's on his way to O'Hare) and said that Mr. Suzuki should have also sent at least a rough idea of Christine's itinerary but he did not so I will contact him rearding this. I will also ask him the translator's name.
Further, I talked with daughter, Apryl, (who knows everything about Nippon/Japan); she said that if Chris uses her credit card to get Japanese yen she can probably do it in certain places but it is not advisable. She suggested that Chris simply change about $200 when she gets to Narita Airport or even go to the money exchange at O'Hare (Terminal 5). I am sure that ($200=about 23000 yen) will be enough for small incidentals as any larger gifts or souvenirs she can use her credit card (which when the bill comes will show the yen that she used to pay for whatever she bought with the yen/dollar conversion rate and the actual dollar amount). If Chris runs out of yen cash I am sure that her translator (Jonathan?) will be able to help her. (If she has any left over she can sell it to Al and if he has any left over from his trip next year I will buy it from him.)
Next, her contact at Japan Airlines, Mr. Ueshima, will return from Japan today and will be in the office tomorrow. I will get his cell phone number, make sure at what time the Japan Airlines counter opens on Sunday and ask about the possibility of any Customs Duty on the doll or any of her accessories.
Next, Mr. Hatayama suggested that you not nail shut the two crates so that TSA can have easy access to them. He suggested that she enclose the nails in the crate and I will have Mr. Ueshima provide a hammer so that the crates can be nailed shut after the possible inspection by TSA.
Another next, please fax me a copy of Christine's passport so that I can fax it to Mr. Ueshima so that they can confirm that her last name is Del Re and not Re.
Almost finally, I am sure I advised Chris to be sure to take walking shoes.
Nearly finally, Mr. Hatayama wanted to know if there was any mention in the Milwaukee papers about yesterday's press conference (if so, he would like to have Chris take the newspaper(s) with her.
Almost nearly finally, Al did mention about the rare books that he bought regarding Friendship Dolls; we might want to send that along with the gifts for their exhibition in Japan. He gave us information on the lady in Japan who has copies of the letters from the Japanese schoolchildren written to American schoolchildren in 1927. Mr. Hatayam will act on that.
Finally, a quick few phrases in Japanes that could help Chris:
Ohio go zi e mas (Good morning)
Cone ban wa (Good evening)
OH Ya sue me na sigh (Godd night)
Doe moe a ri ga toe go zi e mas (thank you very much)
E ta da key mas (When you start eating and they are paying/ it means thank you for the meal)
Go chee soo sa ma day she ta (when you are finished eating/thank you for the food).
The drive from the airport to Mito City where she will be for 4 nights is about 75 minutes (depending on traffic).
The following morning she will be up early. Tell her to take matches or something that gives thre address of the hotel she will be staying at and maybe go out for a short walk to try to 'defeat' the jet lag.
Please tell her to SPEAK SLOWLY in English; most of the people will have some knowledge of English.
That is about all for now.
Sincerely,
Bill
