For broad distribution - please share with colleagues.
The Canadian Museum of Nature is hosting the 66th Annual Meeting of the
Society of Vertebrate Paleontology 2006 October 18-22 in Ottawa. In
association with this conference, on Sunday October 22, the one day
workshop Assessing Risks to Your Collections will be offered. This
workshop is open to the general museum community without registration to
the SVP conference itself.
Assessing Risks to Your Collections
The objective of this non-technical workshop is to demonstrate to
participants a method of assessing risks to collections that has been
developed and implemented at the Canadian Museum of Nature. This
workshop was designed and developed by conservators and collection
managers for organizations and individuals interested in a global
framework to determine their preventive conservation priorities and to
learn how this can help them to invest their limited funds in a
cost-effective manner. Participants come from varied backgrounds and
working experiences.
The one day workshop will teach participants to:
* identify all the risks to which collections are exposed, which
agents of deterioration are responsible and how risks differ;
* assess the relative importance of risks;
* understand how risk assessment can be used to effectively
communicate collection care needs to obtain management and/or grant
support.
Participants are provided with various learning tools including the
workshop manual, exercises, references and a glossary of terms. This
one-day workshop focuses on assessing risks to collections. The
participant manual also covers managing risks to collections.
Date: Sunday, October 22, 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.
Minimum number of participants: 20
Maximum number of participants: 45
Cost: $100 USD, includes manual for workshop
