Graduate Assistantship Available - Systematic Entomology
Field Museum of Natural History, Chicago, Illinois, USA
The Field Museum of Natural History seeks a graduate research assistant
in systematic entomology. Funded by the NSF, the assistantship will
focus on morphology and reconstructions of evolutionary relationships of
bat flies (Diptera: Streblidae and Nycteribiidae) along with their
sister families, the Hippoboscidae (ked flies) and Glossinidae (tse tse
flies). This work is undertaken in collaboration with Dr. Katharina
Dittmar de la Cruz, who is leading molecular studies of these same
groups. Our project offers the student to develop skills in insect
morphology, character coding and analyses, phylogenetic reconstruction,
and comparative analyses.
Phylogenetic trees developed during the project will subsequently be
used to study ecology, evolution, and host-parasite cospeciation between
obligate bat ectoparasites and their host bats (Mammalia: Chiroptera).
Opportunities for field work with small mammals and ectoparasites are
also available.
The student would need to apply to the Committee on Evolutionary Biology
at the University of Chicago (deadline mid-December), or to the Ecology
& Evolution program, Department of Biological Sciences at the University
of Illinois at Chicago (deadline 1 January). At any time, 20-30 students
in these programs are based at the Field Museum of Natural History.
