Paleontological Preparator

 

The Dinosaur Institute at the Natural History Museum of Los Angeles
County is seeking Paleontological Preparators to work on the renovation
of the Museum's Dinosaur Galleries.  The Paleontological Preparator
performs skilled and technical work involved with the collection,
preparation, stabilization and restoration of fossils necessary for
exhibition, curation and scientific study. The Paleontological
Preparator may also produce replicas, models and mounted specimens of
fossils for scientific exchanges and exhibits as well as participate in
public education programs and demonstrations involving fossils and
fossil preparation. This position requires minimal supervision and may
involve supervision of student workers and volunteers. The estimated
term for the duration of these positions is two years.

 

The Paleontological Preparator position involves the following duties:

 

Remove fossils from surrounding matrix using a diversity of skilled
techniques.

 

Preserve and restore fossils for permanent storage in curated
collections.

 

Make replicas of specimens using molds and casts for use in scientific
study, scientific exchanges, or exhibits.

 

Work with Senior Preparator in mounting fossil specimens for public
exhibit.

 

Maintain collection data associated with scientific specimens.

 

Clean and maintain museum fossil exhibits.

 

Participate in public education programs and demonstrations involving
fossils and fossil preparation.

 

Maintain and does minor repairs to preparation laboratory tools and
equipment.

 

May participate in fieldwork, collecting and documenting fossil
discoveries.

 

May participate in cataloging, storage, and retrieval of scientific
specimens.

 

Exercise independent judgment in the preparation of artifacts and
specimens under the general direction of a Supervisor.

 

Uses own judgment in determining project work, meeting established
deadlines, decides what tools and resources to use and when to use them.

 

Supervise, train and schedule student workers and volunteers.

 

This position has the following requirements:

 

Demonstrated experience in the preparation of fossils.

 

A completed four-year college degree program with courses in geology,
biology or relevant technical arts or fine arts in an accredited college
or recognized trade school

 

Ability to perform public demonstrations about fossil preparation.

 

Must demonstrate knowledge of biological morphology and taxonomy, field
geological practices, casting and molding techniques, safe and proper
use of laboratory equipment and shop tools, and standard museum
conservation and curation practices.

 

Must demonstrate interpersonal skills necessary to work with volunteers
and provide instruction to students and adults of all ages and
backgrounds.

 

Excellent oral and written English skills required.

 

Salary is commensurate with experience plus excellent benefits.
Positions are available as both full time and part time, regular, exempt
positions.
