Dear SPNHC Members,
 
There are new resources available for museums and other collecting  
institutions that may be threatened by the current tropical storms/hurricanes in  the 
Gulf Coast region. 
 
Heritage Preservation maintains a Web site that is constantly updated to  
provide information on resources and to allow those affected by flooding or  
other damage to file reports that will help trigger assistance for individual  
institutions and provide data essential to stimulate large-scale regional or  
national response resources.

In addition, the American Institute for Conservation now has a 24-hour  
service that can be used for advice or to arrange for AIC-Cultural Emergency  
Response Teams (AIC-CERT) to provide on-site assistance. A brochure  describing the 
program is attached. The number to call is  202-661-8068. 
 
During the recent midwest floods, the AIC-CERTs were able to provide  
assistance and supplies (funded through donations), to various institutions. The  
AIC-CERT Coordinator works with Heritage Preservation as well as other  
non-governmental and governmental agencies so that all response efforts are  
coordinated and compatible.
 
Our great hope is that there is no reason to need any of these  resources, 
but lessons learned from the Katrina disaster have illustrated  the need for 
this level of preparation to protect our cultural and  scientific patrimony.
