WELCOME TO THE FIRST ISSUE OF THE
USCBS ELECTRONIC NEWSLETTER!

I am pleased to introduce the first issue of the USCBS members' electronic
newsletter! Thanks to Joy Yoshikawa and Scott Lindberg of The Design
Company for making it happen. Thanks also to all of you who have shown your
support for the protection of cultural property during armed conflict by joining
USCBS and supporting our important programs. In particular I would like to
thank our partner organizations the Archaeological Institute of America and
the American Institute for Conservation of Historic and Artistic Works, for
supporting our military training program. In the past year, USCBS has
received official recognition from the International Committee of the Blue Shield
in Paris, provided cultural heritage protection training for half a dozen
deploying military units, and raised public awareness of the importance of U.S.
ratification of the 1954 Hague Convention for the Protection of Cultural
Property in the Event of Armed Conflict. I am particularly proud of the strides
we have made toward better coordination between the many relevant government
and cultural heritage organizations, both in the U.S. and abroad.
However, there is much more to do - I look forward to working with all of you
toward more success in 2008!
Corine Wegener
President

U.S. COMMITTEE OF THE BLUE SHIELD RECEIVES RECOGNITION FROM THE
INTERNATIONAL COMMITTEE OF THE BLUE SHIELD IN PARIS

One our first goals as an organization was to receive official recognition
as a Blue Shield national committee from the International Committee of the
Blue Shield. USCBS secured the endorsements of the American Institute for
Conservation of Historic and Artistic Works, the American Library
Association, the Archaeological Institute of America, the Association of Moving Image
Archivists, the American Association of Museums/International Council of
Museums-U.S. Committee, the Society of American Archivists, and the U.S.
National Committee of the International Council on Monuments and Sites, all
important U.S. cultural heritage organizations.
On October 4, 2007, USCBS received a letter from Joan van Albada, President
of the International Committee of the Blue Shield, informing us that our
application for recognition was approved at their May 22nd, 2007 board meeting
and that USCBS has been added to the ranks of fifteen other national Blue
Shield committees worldwide and the emerging Association of National
Committees of the Blue Shield (ANCBS). Thanks so much to who helped make this
possible! USCBS is now part of the international effort to make the Blue Shield an
effective force for the protection of cultural property worldwide. _Click

BLUE SHIELD CULTURAL PROPERTY
TRAINING FOR U.S. MILITARY UNITS

USCBS / AIA board member Dr. John Russell trains U.S. Army Civil Affairs
soldiers to recognize and protect archaeological sites during their
mobilization training at Ft. Bragg, North Carolina.
Over the past year, USCBS and two of its partner organizations, the
Archaeological Institute of America and the American Institute for Conservation of
Historic and Artistic Works, have provided cultural property training to a
half-dozen U.S. Army Civil Affairs units preparing to deploy to Iraq,
Afghanistan and other locations around the world. Among their many duties, Civil
Affairs units have responsibility for cultural property issues (also known as
Arts, Monuments, and Archives) within the military theater of operations.
Blue Shield training is provided free of charge, with funding provided by
Blue Shield and its partner organizations. Topics include the history of
cultural property during armed conflict, basic conservation and art handling
techniques, a regional history overview, and the recognition and preservation of
archaeological sites. USCBS relies on its partner organizations and your
membership support to continue this important program. _Click here_

USCBS AT THE ARCHAEOLOGICAL INSTITUTE
OF AMERICA ANNUAL MEETING IN CHICAGO

USCBS president Corine Wegener lectures at the Saving Antiquities for
Everyone booth during the 2008 AIA annual meeting in Chicago.
Several USCBS members attended the annual meeting of the Archaeological
Institute of America in Chicago, January 3-6, 2008. USCBS shared an
information booth in the exposition hall with the Lawyer's Committee for Cultural
Heritage Preservation thanks to board member Patty Gerstenblith. On Janurary
4th, USCBS president and founder Corine Wegener gave a talk at the Saving
Antiquities for Everyone booth, discussing her work as a U.S. Army Arts,
Monuments, and Archives officer in Iraq and how that led to the founding of the U.S.
Committee of the Blue Shield. On January 5th, several USCBS members
attended a round table discussion hosted by Dr. Laurie Rush of the U.S. Department
of Defense Cultural Resource Management Program. Representatives from the
military, U.S. government and other interested parties discussed how to
better coordinate current efforts to provide the U.S. military with information
on cultural property protection and resources.
