_ (mip://04c81b70/default.html#articles_5) Program Helps Museums Develop
Emergency Plans
Small and mid-sized museums in Mississippi, Ohio, and Texas can now _apply
_ (http://heritage.pmailus.com/pmailweb/ct?d=EhBxRgBzAAEAAACRAAGbjA) to
participate in Heritage Preservation’s new pilot project, the _Risk Evaluation
and Planning Program (REPP)_
(http://heritage.pmailus.com/pmailweb/ct?d=EhBxRgBzAAEAAAG_AAGbjA) . The program provides each participating museum with a
professional evaluation of risks to its collections, priorities for mitigating
those risks, and assistance in creating or updating an emergency plan. Five
institutions from each state will be selected in May 2008.
Applications can be downloaded from _www.heritagepreservation.org/repp_
(http://heritage.pmailus.com/pmailweb/ct?d=EhBxRgBzAAEAAASvAAGbjA) and must be
submitted electronically no later than March 31, 2008. The project supports a
two-day site visit by a team of assessors – a preservation professional and
emergency responder. The assessors will identify hazards to the museum’s
collections and facilities, work with staff to develop priorities for
mitigation, and offer resources to help develop a new or improved emergency plan.
Assessments will take place between July and October 2008, and emergency plans
must be submitted to Heritage Preservation within six months of the site
visit. Please see _application_
(http://heritage.pmailus.com/pmailweb/ct?d=EhBxRgBzAAEAAAeBAAGbjA) for eligibility requirements.
The Risk Evaluation and Planning Program is funded with a National
Leadership Grant from the Institute of Museum and Library Services. For further
information, visit _www.heritagepreservation.org/repp_
(http://heritage.pmailus.com/pmailweb/ct?d=EhBxRgBzAAEAAAkOAAGbjA) or contact program staff at

The Heritage Emergency National Task Force has developed a set of
preparedness tools based on lessons learned from Hurricane Katrina. Click on each title

_Working with Emergency Responders: Tips for Cultural Institutions_
(http://heritage.pmailus.com/pmailweb/ct?d=EhBxRgBzAAIAAAHRAAGbjA)
Getting to know local emergency responders before disaster strikes can help
keep staff and collections safe. This poster describes how to find and
build relationships with emergency responders, as well as what information
responders need to better protect cultural institutions.

Business Administration (SBA) Disaster Aid for Cultural Institutions_
(http://heritage.pmailus.com/pmailweb/ct?d=EhBxRgBzAAIAAAUcAAGbjA)
A concise Web site leads cultural institutions through the process of
applying to the SBA and FEMA for assistance after major disasters. Links put
policies, application forms, and other necessary paperwork at the user’s
fingertips.
_MayDay_ (http://heritage.pmailus.com/pmailweb/ct?d=EhBxRgBzAAIAAAd_AAGbjA)
An annual event encouraging cultural institutions to undertake at least one
simple emergency preparedness task. Created by the Society of American
Archivists, MayDay was expanded by the Task Force in 2007 to include libraries,
museums, and arts and historic preservation organizations. Look for more
information later this winter.
_Recommended Professional Emergency Management Training_
(http://heritage.pmailus.com/pmailweb/ct?d=EhBxRgBzAAIAAAm8AAGbjA)
A list of free courses that teach cultural heritage staff and volunteer
teams about local, state, and federal disaster response frameworks already in
place, as well as official protocols and structure, terminology, and key local
contacts.
_Foundation Grants for Preservation in Libraries, Archives, and Museums_
(http://heritage.pmailus.com/pmailweb/ct?d=EhBxRgBzAAIAAAwOAAGbjA)
A free downloadable publication produced jointly by the Library of Congress
and the Foundation Center lists 1,725 grants of $5,000 or more awarded by
474 foundations from 2003 through 2007. The guide covers activities related to
conservation and preservation. Forging Networks with Alliance for
Response
Heritage Preservation's _Alliance for Response_
(http://heritage.pmailus.com/pmailweb/ct?d=EhBxRgBzAAQAAAByAAGbjA) initiative builds partnerships between
the stewards of cultural heritage and emergency responders. One-day Forums
serve as a starting point for ongoing cooperative efforts.
The Philadelphia Alliance for Response Forum, held June 13, 2007, attracted
nearly 90 cultural heritage professionals and emergency managers for a day
of presentations and discussion on working together to prepare for and
recover from disasters. Three follow-up meetings have resulted in much progress.
The city’s emergency management agency asked the directors of local cultural
institutions to identify a specific emergency contact person. The group is
also working on incident notification systems for cultural heritage
institutions and an official link to the city’s Emergency Operations Center. Mutual aid
agreements are under consideration.
The Alliance for Response Forum in Atlanta in February 2007 led to the
establishment of the Heritage Emergency Response Alliance. The group’s mission is
to serve as a resource to cultural institutions in the Metro Atlanta area
and around the state and to mitigate the loss of cultural heritage materials in
the event of a disaster. In March 2008, HERA will sponsor a tabletop
exercise on the specific challenges to emergency response at a cultural center and
the role of first responders. Representatives from local police and fire
departments and county emergency management agencies will take part. New
Kudos for Field Guide = Another Reason to Own It

The _Field Guide to Emergency Response_
(http://heritage.pmailus.com/pmailweb/ct?d=EhBxRgBzAAMAAACLAAGbjA) is a disaster planning and response resource
that instructs staff and volunteers at historic sites, museums, archives,
and libraries to respond to emergencies safely and stabilize collections. Its
compact, spiral-bound format features step-by-step advice, and handy
checklists allow institutions to customize the guide. The accompanying DVD
illustrates what to expect in disasters, provides health and safety tips, offers
advice on organizing salvage efforts, and demonstrates basic salvage techniques
for mud, mold, soot, and other common problems.
In August 2007, the Field Guide was honored by the Society of American
Archivists with its 2006 Preservation Publication Award. It was cited for “
writing of superior excellence and usefulness, which advances the theory or
practice of preservation.”
The Field Guide, along with the _Emergency Response and Salvage Wheel_
(http://heritage.pmailus.com/pmailweb/ct?d=EhBxRgBzAAMAAAUUAAGbjA) , has been
honored by inclusion in the Institute of Museum and Library Services' _Connecting
to Collections Bookshelf_
(http://heritage.pmailus.com/pmailweb/ct?d=EhBxRgBzAAMAAAXoAAGbjA) . Emergency Planning and Response Resources at Your
Fingertips
A component of the Institute of Museum and Library Services' Connecting to
Collections initiative puts resources for emergency planning and response at
your fingertips. The new _Guide to Online Resources_
(http://heritage.pmailus.com/pmailweb/ct?d=EhBxRgBzAAUAAAGeAAGbjA) lists the top online disaster
resources, addressing topics such as developing an emergency plan, fire
suppression, and object salvage.
