Full-Time Position Available for Spring 2008

POSITION/TITLE:   Manager of Collections and Database
Versatile individual, a bit offbeat, sought to help manage a collection
of approximately 30,000 natural history specimens and cultural artifacts
from around the world. (See a sample at www.brooklynkids.org/emuseum.) A
central feature of the position is managing all aspects of the BCM
collections database and emuseum. The position plays a crucial role in
BCM's 3-member Collections Department, which is also responsible for an
object-based changing exhibit, Collections Central; the Museum's
archives; a small research library; and a loan outreach program called
Portable Collections. A good position for someone who seeks variety and
opportunities to exercise his/her multiple talents.

Responsibilities:
1.	Ensure the care and safe, orderly management of the Museum's
collections and associated records
2.	Assist with processing acquisitions; acquisition planning;
deaccessioning; conservation; documentation and research about the
collection; exhibit development; and other collection activities
3.	Manage the collection storerooms, including maintenance,
organization, object storage and movement, monitoring climate and pests
4.	Maintain and continue to develop the collections database and
related collection records, including managing upgrades and Collections
Central Online; and updating the Collections Database Manual. Perform or
coordinate object photography; scan images for the database
5.	Perform and coordinate ongoing inventory of the Collections
6.	Train and assist staff in use of the database; respond to
requests from staff, colleagues, and public for images of objects and
information about the collection; assist with reports about the
collection
7.	Take on other tasks as they come up.

Some requirements:  
Note: Because we are looking for someone who can wear many hats, a
candidate may meet many but not all of the following requirements but
offer other relevant skills. Feel free to indicate the range of your
skills and interests. However, database skills are a must.
1.	Three or more years of museum experience in some combination of
collections management, registrarial, database, and/or curatorial work
2.	Professional experience, beyond data entry, using The Museum
System,.
3.	Familiarity with or aptitude to learn digital photography of
objects
4.	Strong organizational and detail skills; capacity to enjoy the
challenges of managing multiple projects simultaneously; ability to
approach tasks systematically and creatively, to solve problems, and to
follow through; initiative and independence; 
5.	Excellent communication skills; ability to work well with others
and in teams
6.	Master's degree or equivalent experience in a content area such
as biology, zoology, geology, anthropology, art of Africa or the
indigenous Americas, or in museum studies in collections management with
a content background
7.	Familiarity with children, openness to object-based teaching and
learning, being handy with tools, being able to research and write
clearly, general all-round cheerfulness, and other such qualities are
welcome.
