Research and Collections Technician, SG-14
LOCATION: Albany SALARY: $36,228*

The New York State Museum is seeking to fill a position of Research and
Collections Technician to perform work centered on the collection,
identification, documentation, care and maintenance of botanical
specimens for the New York State Museum under the supervision of the
Curator of Botany. The Research and Collections Technician will be
responsible for maintaining and/or contributing to collections databases
that enable inventory control and may assist in scientific research
projects. Other duties include, but are not limited to the following:
● Maintaining electronic and paper herbarium records;
● Preparing and mounting specimens;
● Recording, packing and shipping outgoing loans, exchanges and
gifts; processing returned loans and incoming specimens;
● Managing the exchange program and supervising interns and
volunteers working on collections;
● Providing access to secure storage areas for non-specialist
staff, visitors, researchers, volunteers and interns; providing tours
centered on specific collections, collection areas, galleries and/or
curation practices;
● Gathering, organizing and transmitting collection data requested
by corresponding researchers, officials and the public;
● Reviewing and interpreting field records and other notes
associated with specimens to determine correct data and preparing proper
printed labels as necessary for specimens in processing;
● Entering, editing and updating object records for each
artifact/specimen into the collections management databases using MULTI
MIMSY XG and other software and using established database protocols to
ensure that all descriptive and inventory data are complete and
accurate; verifying and researching information by reviewing pertinent
documentation such as field books, catalogue cards and published
sources;
● Photographing and creating digital images of selected
artifacts/objects to meet professional standards for museum collections
consistent with established protocols for entry of items into the
collections management database; and
● Monitoring collection storage and preparation areas for pests
and detrimental environmental conditions and responding, including on an
emergency basis, as necessary.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: A Bachelor’s degree which includes or is
supplemented by 18 semester credit hours in archaeology, anthropology,
history or in one of the natural sciences (biology, zoology, geology)
AND one year of experience assisting in scientific or historical
research in the field or in artifact/specimen care and maintenance in a
laboratory or a museum.
Preferred qualifications: Bachelor’s degree in Biology with a
concentration in Botany and work experience in a herbarium.
Conditions of Employment: This will be a provisional appointment.
*Leads to a maximum salary of $46,041 based on annual performance
advances.
