at the panels and reception and lively discussions in the Question-and-Answer
periods and during the popular Connections Lab, a gathering of attendees,
speakers, and representatives of funding orgnizations.

Selected for Emergency Planning Pilot Program
Recent floods demonstrate the importance of an ongoing commitment to
preparing for emergencies. By identifying incentives to help institutions with
valuable collections but limited resources plan for emergencies, the Risk
Evaluation and Planning Program aims to increase the number of cultural
institutions that are prepared to deal with disaster.

artifacts and historical documents that are in need of conservation. Applicants
will build on completed conservation assessments of their collections, to ensure
that the Bank of America/IMLS grants are used in accordance with best
practices in the field, and underscore the importance of assessment planning.

   (http://heritage.pmailus.com/pmailweb/ct?d=Fk4FfQBzAAn-----AAIGiA) In
January 2008, the _Institute of Museum and Library Services_
(http://heritage.pmailus.com/pmailweb/ct?d=Fk4FfQBzAAkAAAA9AAIGiA) (IMLS) awarded _19 Statewide
Planning Grants_
(http://heritage.pmailus.com/pmailweb/ct?d=Fk4FfQBzAAkAAACoAAIGiA) to address the recommendations of the Heritage Health Index Report on
the State of America's Collections. Statewide Planning Grants are two-year
opportunity that is part of the IMLS initiative, _Connecting to Collections: A
Call to Action._
(http://heritage.pmailus.com/pmailweb/ct?d=Fk4FfQBzAAkAAAHYAAIGiA)
IMLS hopes to make a Statewide Planning Grant to each eligible state or
territory. The second and final deadline for applications is October 16, 2008.
_CLICK HERE_ (http://heritage.pmailus.com/pmailweb/ct?d=Fk4FfQBzAAkAAAMbAAIGiA)
for application information. If Heritage Preservation may be of assistance
as you plan an application, contact us at 202-233-0800 or
_survey at heritagepreservation.org_ (mailto:survey at heritagepreservation.org) .Most of the current
awardees will conduct a survey of the museums, libraries, historical
societies, and archives in their states as part of their planning process. Heritage
Preservation has contacted each project to discuss how the Heritage Health
Index data might be useful and to offer our experience having conducted such a
study. Most importantly, statewide planning grant projects are being
encouraged to use the Heritage Health Index questions so that their state data may
be comparable to the national data Heritage Preservation collected in 2004.
Heritage Preservation staff participated in an IMLS-sponsored conference call
with the awardees in May and will ask awarded states for updates on the
surveys they are conducting.
