Museum Origins: Readings in Early Museum History and Philosophy has
just been released by Left Coast Press, Inc., of Walnut Creek, CA, USA.
The book of 344 pages is designed as a reading anthology for students
of museology and working museum professionals. The book contains 50
reading from authors writing from antiquity to 1925, with an emphasis
on the period of 1850 to 1925. The purpose of the book is to provide
museologists and historians with a broad selection of significant
historical writings about museums--their origins, philosophies, and
theories on education and exhibition--to be used as a resource for
classroom instruction and as a source of inspiration for working
professionals and scholars interested in the rich history of museums.
One section is devoted to the philosophy of museums with living
collections, including zoos, aquariums, botanical gardens, and
arboretums. Another section is devoted to the relationship between
museums and universities.
