Museum Origins: Readings in Early Museum History and Philosophy has  
just been released by Left Coast Press, Inc., of Walnut Creek, CA, USA.  
  The book of 344 pages is designed as a reading anthology for students  
of museology and working museum professionals.  The book contains 50  
reading from authors writing from  antiquity to 1925, with an emphasis  
on the period of 1850 to 1925.  The purpose of the book is to provide  
museologists and historians with a broad selection of significant  
historical writings about museums--their origins, philosophies, and  
theories on education and exhibition--to be used as a resource for  
classroom instruction and as a source of inspiration for working  
professionals and scholars interested in the rich history of museums.   
One section is devoted to the philosophy of museums with living  
collections, including zoos, aquariums, botanical gardens, and  
arboretums.  Another section is devoted to the relationship between  
museums and universities.
