The New Museum Certificate Program from museumclasses.org starts in January:
· Earn professional credentials without costly travel.
· Level I provides you a basic
understanding of many different facets of museums.
· Level II provides you in-depth knowledge of one area of museums.
Requirements:
· Complete 10 full courses and two short courses for each certificate.
· Attend one statewide, regional or
national multi-day museum conference.
· Complete a final project. This project
can be in the form of an exhibition, a paper, a
conference presentation, or other format approved by NSCC.
· Attend a final chat session with
instructors online to answer specific questions
that test knowledge of the museum topics studied.
How it works:
· $25 annual fee to register for the program.
· Three years to complete each certificate level.
· Successfully complete 10 full courses and
2 short courses for each certificate level. (One
course cannot be used for different certificate levels.)
· Each certificate has some required
courses and a number of optional courses.
· Former museumclasses.org students receive
credit for courses they successfully completed.
Certificate Levels:
· Level I: General Museum Certificate:
Provides a broad overview and understanding of
all areas of museums. Completion of the general
museum certificate ensures competency in basic
museum functions, from management to collection
care and registration to creating an exhibit.
Level II: Museum Specialist Certificates
· Level IIA. Certificate in Collections
Management and Care: A broad range of courses,
from preservation environments to collections
cataloging, ensures the student is well-versed in
conservation principles, collections management,
registration and curatorial concepts and skills.
Students can tailor their course choices to
concentrate on the materials found in their institutions collections.
· Level IIB. Certificate in Exhibit
Practices: After an overview of exhibit
fundamentals, the certificate covers the
specifics of exhibit design, lighting, security,
scripting and evaluations. Optional courses
provide flexibility to tailor the certificate to
the students needs. The Certificate in Exhibit
Practices ensures a high level of competency in all facets of museum exhibits.
· Level IIC. Certificate in Museum
Administration and Management: Starting with the
mission statement and covering people management,
fiscal responsibility, marketing and governance
structures, the Museum Administration and
Management Certificate ensures a thorough
understanding of all facets of upper level museum
management. Included are courses on volunteer and
staff management and motivation.
· Level IID. Certificate in Museum
Facilities Management: Learn what you need to
know about museum facilities, from security
systems, environmental controls, cleaning,
disaster preparedness, fire prevention and pest
management. Completing 10 courses in this
certificate level ensures a high level of
competency and understanding in how the museums
envelope protects the collection it houses.
