>From Dieter Wilken at SBBG:

"For those concerned about the Santa Barbara Botanic Garden, please be
aware that the Garden sustained significant damage from the Jesusita
Fire that has made national news. As of the morning of May 6, several
structures were lost including the director's home, a historic
structure used by the horticulture staff for offices and staff, and at
least one lath-house. Based on comments received from the Fire
Department staff assigned to the Garden, the other structures,
including our Library, Herbarium, and other staff offices, among
others appear, to be "OK", but no one from the Garden has been
permitted into the fire zone to make an inspection. It will be at
least several days before anyone will be able to assess the condition
of the Garden. Currently our phone system and email server are
without power - it will not be possible to call by phone or to send an
emal to the sbbg.org address."

An unknown number of homes have been lost in Mission Canyon and
elseshere, and we are humbled by the experience, but we are deeply
moved by the enormous, truly heroic effort of fire fighters and strike
teams from throughout the State of California who continue to arrive
and provide assistance."

Dieter Wilken
