[NHCOLL-L:4723] baking soda vs borax

Good day,

Can anyone tell me how using baking soda instead of borax in preparing a
bird skin might affect the skin? Unfortunately someone used baking soda
by mistake when preparing a small specimen.

The baking soda was made into a paste using water and applied to the
inside of the skin.

Should the mistake be remedied and, if so, in what sort of time frame
(ie. how bad a mistake is this)?

Thanks in advance,

Lisa
