Hello Ludovic,

The ¡°G.F.B.¡± might be G.F. Breninger. We have his name as the collector associated with some H.K. Coale and B.T. Gault specimens in our ornithology collection. I know next to nothing about him at this point, other than from an assessment of the specimen data, he appears to have collected primarily in Arizona between 1894 to 1904.

The 9266 number is most likely Coale's personal collection number that he applied to the specimen, whereas the number on the back of the tag, 488, might be associated with G.F.B. as a field collection number. Hard to say for certain unless you find documentation to explain it, but that is the pattern we've been finding in our collection.

Subject: [NHCOLL-L:4740] Label H.K.Coale

Dear all,

I have some birds with a label from "Collection H. K. Coale - Chicago" . Who is this man, an ornithologist or a merchant? What are his date of birth and dead?

For example, I have a specimen "¡á/N¡ã9266 - Parus rufescens neglectus (R)/Loc. Santa Cruz Cal. sept. 4-1896". What is this number 9266 ? Is it seems this specimen was publisched or is it just a field number ?

What is this hand writing ¡°G. F(?) B.¡±. I have just this information from Sharpe (1906)

SHARPE, R. B. (1906) ¨C The History of the collections contained in the Natural History Departments of the British Museum- Birds.

¡°60 birds from Arizona and other parts of North America, Presented. [87. 1. 24, 1-60.]. An active American naturalist, from whom the Museum received several interesting species. Many of his skins are in the Sclater Collection.¡±

Thank you for your help

Best regards

Ludovic Besson
