Earlham College invites applications for the Director of the Joseph Moore Museum, a full-time endowed tenure-track academic/administrative position starting in July 2011.

The Director's responsibilities include:

  *   managing the museum's collections,
  * raising funds for continuous museum improvements,
  * maintaining an active research career involving undergraduates,
  * supervising student workers at the museum,
  * teaching one course per year, and
  * providing educational experiences for students both on campus and in the Richmond community.

Qualifications

A Ph.D. in a natural history related field (e.g. Anthropology, Astronomy, Biology, or Geology) and postdoctoral experience, especially in a museum environment, is preferred, although ABD candidates will be considered. Although no previous museum experience is required, the strongest applicants will have experience in curating a natural history museum, including management of collections, staff and external funds. Administrative management experience, a proven ability to manage budgets, and proven fundraising ability are also desirable. Because of the museum's position in a small liberal arts setting, strong candidates also will have a history of effective teaching and a passion for science education and outreach.

To Apply

Applicants should send a curriculum vitae, a statement of teaching philosophy and a statement of research interests that includes a vision for the museum and undergraduate training, along with the full contact information of at least three references to:

The Joseph Moore Museum

The Joseph Moore Museum is the regional natural history museum for Wayne County and Eastern Indiana. It displays approximately 800 specimens in the public spaces and houses an additional 40,000 specimens in its research collections. The museum plays an integral role in the Museum Studies program and supplies many science courses with valuable study specimens.

Natural Science professors serve as advisers for students who curate the research collections and build public exhibits. The museum also supports student-faculty research projects with birds, reptiles and invertebrates, among others. The coordinator for educational outreach organizes and supervises students giving tours and planetarium shows for public visitors; 3,000 area students participate in guided museum experiences each year.

About 25 students staff the museum each semester. They can become involved through work-study, as part of the Museum Studies Program or simply apply because they have a particular interest in the museum. These staff members do everything from opening the museum and greeting visitors, leading school or scout tours, designing and building new exhibits, preparing new study skins for the collections to feeding and caring for our live reptiles.
