Hi Karen,

Yes indeed.
I run a large program on museum lighting and LEDs are a critical part of that.

This link will tell you a little more. On the right side of this page you'll
find "Project Sections" and that will give more detail. There is also a nice report
entitled "Demonstration Assessment of Light-Emitting Diode (LED) Accent
Lighting" at the Field Museum. Now even though it says "accent lighting"
they mean track lighting in an entire gallery.

None of this addresses the impact on collections materials. That's where my research group comes in.
It's unlikely that the collections you mention are really at that high a risk considering the reference
condition is what you're using now which is probably a tungsten halogen source of some form.

But I can answer specific questions you may have. The Getty is about to try these out
and we have some pretty vulnerable materials.

Dear List,

Our museum is seriously looking into using LED lighting in our new building. Those of us in collections are unsure about its effects on natural history specimens. Has anyone out there had experience with LED lighting or seen any compelling evidence that says we should not use it? Collections that would be at risk include fossils, taxidermy, minerals, and books.

Thank you for your time.

Sincerely,

KAREN MORTON
