Caring for Museum Collections
A six-day intensive course for museum professionals at the University of Victoria on southern Vancouver Island from February 21-26, 2011, with Susan L. Maltby.
Museum professionals, regardless of their specialization, have an obligation to care for collections in an appropriate and respectful manner. This course focuses on the principles and practices of preventive conservation and emphasizes:

*         identifying and quantifying the environmental factors that affect collections;

*         developing strategies and practices that mitigate those factors;

* understanding the materials that make up a museum collection - how they degrade, react to their environment and the objects around them; and

* understanding and evaluating the conservation requirements for the safe exhibition and storage of museum collections.
Participants will tour a local conservation lab, engage in hands on work with collections to do condition reporting and explore collections storage at local sites to build preventive conservation skills and develop applicable techniques to care for museum collections.
Registration Deadline: January 24, 2011, register early to ensure a seat; late registrations welcomed if space permits; credit and non-credit options available; can be taken individually for credit towards a Diploma in Cultural Resource Management<http://www.uvcs.uvic.ca/aspnet/Program/Detail/?code=CULRESMNG>, a Professional Specialization Certificate in Collections Management<http://www.uvcs.uvic.ca/aspnet/Program/Detail/?code=PSC%20CM> or towards programs elsewhere (with permission).
