? Maybe that particular application to archaeological artifacts is
new, but those data matrix codes have been in use for insect
specimens for many years now, in many institutions. Go to just about
any major insect collection and you'll see thousands of them. I
believe the same can be said for herbaria and vertebrate collections.
It's too bad the SATO printers used to make them are so clunky (they
print about 7 labels a minute) and hard to maintain. I, for one,
would be curious to know if there are alternatives.
