TITLE:                                     DIRECTOR, JOHN D. COOPER ARCHEOLOGICAL AND PALEONTOLOGICAL CENTER
COLLEGE:                              COLLEGE OF NATURAL SCIENCES AND MATHEMATICS, AND COLLEGE OF HUMANITIES AND SOCIAL SCIENCES
REPORTS TO:                         DEAN, COLLEGE OF NATURAL SCIENCES AND MATHEMATICS, AND DEAN, COLLEGE OF HUMANTIES AND SOCIAL SCIENCES
HOURS:                                   FULL TIME

POSITION SUMMARY:
The Director of the John D. Cooper Archeological and Paleontological Center manages the daily operation of the Center, oversees the fiscal health of the Center, provides strategic leadership for growth and development, promotes the Center to external and internal stakeholders, and supports the research mission of the Center.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
Managing day-to-day operation of the Center (20%)

·       Oversee activities of Faculty Curators and Associate Curators to assure consistency with Mission Statement and all applicable laws and regulations

·       Oversee staff hiring and evaluation processes, with direct input from curators

·       Oversee activities of the curators relating to the management and preservation of the collection

·       Create policies to facilitate meeting the goals of the facility

·       Ensure acquisitions are conducted professionally and legally

·       Coordinate loaning and borrowing of specimens with Faculty Curators according to appropriate county, state and federal regulations

·       Report to the University management team (i.e., Chairs and Deans of the Department of Geological Sciences, Department of Anthropology, College of Natural Sciences and Mathematics, and College of Humanities and Social Sciences)

·       Formulate and oversee key Center operational policies, including policies for accessioning and deaccessioning of materials
Overseeing the fiscal health of the Center (20%)

·       Manage financial aspects of the facility in cooperation with university and county staff

·       Manage funds provided by the county

·       Manage funds associated with designated collections

·       Prepare annual fiscal and programmatic reports for the University and County
Providing strategic leadership for the growth and development of the Center (25%)

·       Develop long-term and annual goals within the Mission Statement of the facility

·       Assume lead role in fundraising, in collaboration with Deans, College Directors of Development, and the CSUF Philanthropic Foundation Task Force

·       Assume leadership role in preparation of grants and contracts to fund scientific, educational, and outreach activities of the Center

·       Oversee and support funding opportunities sought by the Faculty Curators
Promoting the Center to external and internal stakeholders (25%)

·       Lead outreach activities to community groups in and around Orange County

·       Represent the Center in the scientific community

·       Build collaborations with local and regional museums, science centers, and other informal education venues

·       Keep the Technical Advisory Committee, University Steering Committee, and OC Parks personnel informed of progress and site conditions through monthly memos and meetings as well as through an annual report describing the program activities and finances.  Schedule and lead these meetings.
Supporting the research mission of the Center (10%)

·       Participate in and facilitate research activities in the Center

·       Assist and support Curators in individual research initiatives


QUALIFICATIONS:

Essential

·       PhD or equivalent scientific expertise in a discipline related to the goals of the Cooper Center

·       Greater than five years of experience in Archaeology, Paleontology, Museum Science, or a related discipline

·       Established professional in Archaeology,Paleontology, Museum Science, or a related discipline

·       Experience in managing a scientific unit with full fiscal and personnel responsibilities
Preferred

·       Research and/or educational outreach background in Archaeology, Paleontology, Museum Science, or a related discipline

·       Accomplished grantsmanship

·       Experience in public/private fundraising



EDUCATION:
PhD or equivalent scientific experience

PHYSICAL DEMANDS:
Prolonged sitting in front of computer or desk.  Walking, talking, hearing, pulling, bending; may carry 25-30 pounds of objects/material; may be exposed to extreme noiselevel and temperature variations; use arms, hands and fingers to handle, feel, reach; may need to stoop kneel; may be exposed to chemical/industrial odors.
