 *Natural History Survey Collections:  *Collection-based studies remain a
core area of research at INHS.  Its world-renowned collections both reflect
and support the active roles that INHS scientists continue to play in
efforts to improve knowledge of the Earth’s biological diversity. The INHS
collections assembled by INHS scientists and others over the past 150 years
are worldwide in scope and an invaluable research resource.

*Job description:*  Successful candidate will manage existing collections of
Amphibians and Reptiles (140,000+ specimens), Crustaceans (90,000+), Fishes
(850,000+), Birds (20,000+), Mammals (10,000+), and Mollusks (110,000+);
identify biological specimens; coordinate and oversee the proper disposal of
discarded specimens and waste chemicals; assist visitors to collections by
providing access, space, and equipment; be responsible for collection
maintenance including labeling and shelving jars; checking and changing
fluids; accessioning new specimens and backlogged material; maintaining and
ordering supplies (alcohol, jars, lids etc.); preparing and mailing loans
and gifts, and reporting collections activities (number of specimens added
to collections, number of visitors, and number of loans).  The Manager will
also supervise hourlies working in the collections.

*Qualifications:* Applicants must have a B.S. in an appropriate discipline
(e.g. zoology, biology) with 3 years of natural history collections related
experience or a M.S. in an appropriate discipline with 1 year of natural
history collections related experience.  In addition, applicants must have
working knowledge of organisms in one or more of the following groups:
freshwater fishes, reptiles, amphibians, crustaceans, mollusks, mammals,
birds and knowledge of curation techniques for these organisms, including
fluid preservation.  Applicants must have good interpersonal and
organizational skills and experience working with personal computers,
familiarity with word processing, spreadsheet and database software, and the
Internet. Experience with frozen tissue collections and GIS is a plus.

*Salary:* $33,000 - $35,000 per year commensurate with experience and
education.

academic professional, full-time, grant-supported 12-month position.  The
