Below is an announcement about BRIT's upcoming Grand Opening on Saturday May 21. Thanks for all the good wishes and congratulations we have already received from our friends on this listserve!

An update on herbarium access at BRIT: During the grand opening of the new facility the herbarium will be open for inspection and tours but not for actual research. There are two reasons for this. First, moving about a million specimens into the new compactor system and new cabinets at BRIT in only 4 months (this was all originally planned with a moving date of August 2010!) has been a huge task, and we are not yet finished. Second, most of the staff will be involved in providing tours, talks, and other tasks during the opening and will not be available to dedicate the time that should be provided for visiting researchers. Researchers are encouraged to plan for visits at future dates when the facility staff will be better prepared and the herbarium will be well-organized and accessible. Our best estimate for this is August 2011. We thank you for your patience and support!

Join NBC 5 and the Botanical Research Institute of Texas (BRIT) at the grand opening ceremonies of BRIT's new facility on Saturday, May 21, from 10:00 a.m. until 6:00 p.m. in Fort Worth's Cultural District. It will be a day filled with conservation-themed activities, tours and presentations for the whole family.

The new 5.2-acre botanical research campus is located at 1700 University Drive next to the Fort Worth Botanical Gardens. Take a tour of the innovative 70,000 square foot energy efficient and sustainable headquarters designed to achieve the U.S. Green Building Council LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environment Design) Platinum-rating. It is the first such building of its kind in Tarrant County.

There will be a "Turning on the Switch" dedication, followed by a ribbon cutting ceremony, live music and other festivities for the whole family. In addition, Hon. Carter Burdette and Dr. S. H. Sohmer, Tim McKinney, BRIT's Board Chairman, and Congresswoman Kay Granger will be in attendance along with key BRIT board members and donors. Research dignitaries from around the world will also be helping in the celebration. Come and discover how BRIT shares knowledge about the plant world to enhance life for all living things.

Founded in 1987, the Botanical Research Institute of Texas is an international, scientific research and learning center focused on conservation and knowledge sharing. Based in Fort Worth, BRIT documents the diversity of plant life and conducts extensive research around the world. Current major projects are in Texas, Europe, Peru, and Papua New Guinea. In the last ten years, BRIT scientists have located and described scores of species previously unknown to science.

BRIT uses botanical solutions to address globally challenging problems ranging from pollution clean up to sustainable food sources. By serving as a think tank and catalyst, BRIT inspires learning and forms interdisciplinary collaborations for critical research within scientific, educational, social, cultural, and business communities.
