Hurricane Irene: Heritage Preservation's Preparation and Response
In late August Hurricane Irene swept up the East Coast, assailing states
with flooding rains and strong winds. New York, New Jersey, and Vermont
suffered the worst damage from flooding following the storm, with some areas
of Vermont remaining isolated by flood waters for several days. On August
31, Heritage Preservation convened a conference call on behalf of the
Heritage Emergency National Task Force to share information and known damage
reports in all of the East Coast states affected by the storm. Over 80
participants joined the call, with representatives from the Task Force joined by
East Coast state cultural and emergency management leaders. A summary of the
conference call has been posted on Heritage Preservation’s _Information on
Major Disasters Web Page_
(http://heritagepreservation.us1.list-manage1.com/track/click?u=00cbcc194404641e545c4b972&id=315e2028d4&e=2209f40f73) .

>From the call, Heritage Preservation was able to learn that despite many
fallen trees and power outages, cultural heritage institutions in most
states fared well in the storm. Public libraries in many communities jumped
into action, providing much-needed power, Internet access, and a sense of
normalcy to their constituents. Heritage Preservation’s local _Alliance for
Response networks_
(http://heritagepreservation.us1.list-manage.com/track/click?u=00cbcc194404641e545c4b972&id=20c7c3e23a&e=2209f40f73) were also active
preparing for the storm. The New York City Alliance network joined in the
city’s Office of Emergency Management pre- and post-storm conference calls.
Vermont’s Cultural Heritage and Art Recovery Team (VCHART), an outgrowth
of Vermont Alliance for Response, is acting as an information gathering and
sharing resource by working with the Vermont Preservation Trust, Vermont
Division for Historic Preservation, Vermont State Archives and Public
Records, Vermont Historical Society, Vermont Department of Libraries, Vermont
Emergency Management, and AIC-CERT to carry out damage assessments and offer
advice on the salvage of collections.

Mid-September Changes to NEH Grants for Sustainable Preservation Strategies
NEH is announcing new guidelines and some changes this year to its
_Sustaining Cultural Heritage Collections_
(http://heritagepreservation.us1.list-manage1.com/track/click?u=00cbcc194404641e545c4b972&id=18903c8ab7&e=2209f40f73
) grant program. To enhance the outcomes of planning grants and to
encourage incremental improvements in the care of collections, applicants for
planning projects may request up to an additional $10,000 to carry out one or
more recommendations made by the interdisciplinary planning team during
the course of the project. Such work could help demonstrate the benefits of
sustainable preservation strategies or lead to new information or changes
in conditions that would influence "next steps." For such planning
projects, the maximum award would be $50,000. The deadline for applications will be
December 1, 2011. The new guidelines should be posted _here_

detailed description of planning projects and the range of activities that
are eligible for support.
