Hello everyone:
I have just inherited a collection of mammals from the Museum of
Discovery in Little Rock. Many of them were collected by John R.
Preston, who apparently had worked for a short time at our museum
sometime before 1970. No one here remembers him.
Many of the interesting rodent skulls/skins are unidentified, but
with a number (x-*) which might be the prep number from MD, but which
are not in their otherwise excellent log. That museum is shedding its
collections and going into the exhibit phase of existence, and none of
the current people there ever met Preston. Nor have I.
I find one reference to him: The Mammals of Harmon County, Oklahoma
1970. Proceedings of the Oklahoma Academy of Science for 1968, 49:42-60.
I wonder if anyone knows where more of his rodents are reposited,
collecting expeditions, or anything else about him for my files. It
would be wonderful to be able to salvage these specimens. These
specimens seem to be from Colorado or "out west" somewhere, judging
from others with data.
Thank you.
