Dear Kim,
we do not look after histological thin sections but palaeontological and petrological ones in addition to the fossil/rock specimens from which they were prepared.
I know this is not exactly the same application as yours but our methodology might be suitable as a template.
Each thin section prepared from a specimen becomes part of the specimen itself. Sometimes it is necessary to cut the original several times before preparing the thin section(s). All of the resulting pieces and sections then carry the original accession number of the specimen. In addition, each piece and thin section is given its own running number which is appended to the accession number following a '.'.
Example: if specimen xx.yy.Gzzz is sectioned, resulting in three pieces and two sections, the new labelling will be as follows: xx.yy.Gzzz.1 and xx.yy.Gzzz.2 for the thin sections and xx.yy.Gzzz.3-5 for the remaining pieces of the original specimen.
If the specimen is a fossil then all the fossil pieces go back into the same tray, with a note on the label that two thin sections exist of the specimen. The sections themselves are kept separately in the thin section store.
I hope this helps, please let me know if any of this is unclear, it seems a little complicated to explain without being able to show you actual specimens and labels.
Best wishes
Christian

Subject: [NHCOLL-L:5963] curating slides
Hi Folks,
How many of you curate histological slides in addition to the "traditional" physical specimens? Is there some institution or institutions that specialize in this? I.e. if we felt we were not capable of managing these well is there someplace that could co-curate slides with us?
Kim
