97 Museums Will Participate in Conservation Assessment Program
2013 application to be released October 1, 2012
For immediate release
April 27, 2012
Washington, D.C. -The Conservation Assessment Program (CAP), which assists small museums in providing appropriate care for endangered collections, has announced this year’s participating museums. In 2012, 97 museums in 34 states, Guam, and the Republic of Palau will have the condition of their collections and historic structures assessed. CAP is administered by Heritage Preservation and funded by the Institute of Museum and Library Services through its National Leadership Grants program.
The wide array of 2012 recipients includes the Seabee Museum & Memorial Park in North Kingstown, Rhode Island; the History of Diving Museum in Islamorada, Florida; the University of Guam Herbarium in Mangilao, Guam; the Soudan Underground Mine State Park in Soudan, Minnesota; and the Kansas African American Museum in Wichita, Kansas. To view the complete list of 2012 CAP participants, visit the Heritage Preservation Web site<http://heritagepreservation.us1.list-manage.com/track/click?u=00cbcc194404641e545c4b972&id=17ea8597c0&e=5732b353ec>.
CAP helps small to mid-sized museums of all types, from art museums to zoos, obtain general assessments of the condition of their collections, environment, and historic buildings. Following an on-site assessment, the museum receives a report recommending priorities to improve collections care. This report assists museums in educating staff and board members on conservation practices, creating long-range and emergency plans, and raising funds to improve the care of their collections.
“The Conservation Assessment Program plays an essential part in helping IMLS achieve its strategic goal to support exemplary stewardship of museum and library collections,” said Susan Hildreth, Director of the Institute of Museum and Library Services. “We are proud to partner with Heritage Preservation to assist small museums plan for the preservation of their collections so that their artifacts and documents will be available for generations to come.”
Since 1990, 2,700 museums have participated in CAP, including museums in all 50 states and the U. S. territories of the District of Columbia, U.S. Virgin Islands, Northern Mariana Islands, Republic of Palau, and Puerto Rico. “For more than twenty years museums participating in CAP have used it to demonstrate to private, local, state, and federal funding sources that support of collections care is an excellent a tool for engaging new audiences, contributing to a museum’s mission to promote learning and, thereby, ensuring that the museum’s collections will be available for the future,” said Lawrence L. Reger, President of Heritage Preservation.
Heritage Preservation continues to meet the needs of the CAP applicants and participants through new online initiatives. CAP applicants have taken advantage of the online application for the program for the past two years, and now participants can benefit from informational webinars. The first CAP participant webinar debuted in February 2012, and additional online offerings will be made available later this year.
The 2013 CAP application will be available on Heritage Preservation’s Web site<http://heritagepreservation.us1.list-manage1.com/track/click?u=00cbcc194404641e545c4b972&id=2db8701281&e=5732b353ec>, on Monday, October 1, 2012. Heritage Preservation evaluates CAP applications in the order in which they are received, so museums are encouraged to submit their completed applications as soon as possible. The postmark deadline for applications is December 3, 2012.
