Just a side note to the discussion on freeze drying: a few years back we were able to extract clean and reliable DNA from lyopholized (freeze-dried) mollusk tissue. These were small samples in glass ampoules that were at least 30 years old. If you have a freeze dryer and are interested in preserving DNA records, therefore, this may be a cheaper (no maintenance!) alternative to keeping a wet or frozen collection.
