Folks

For those on the other side of the Atlantic there is a good (not cheap though) supplier in the UK in Dixon Glass. They also manufacture large containers from borosilicate glass.

Dear Jessa,

maybe I am coming up with an old idea for replacing (commercially
produced) glass containers posted here already before, but perhaps still an alternative especially for large specimens (max. width: 300 mm, max.
[stable] hight: 1200 mm): it is possible to melt larger glass container from borosilicate glass tubes (see attached - glass holds two Australian lungfishes, dimensions of the glass are 250x1000 mm).

These glass tubes are produced by Schott Duran - and as far as I know - available in the US.

Smaller glasses are possible either - we order regularly 130x300 mm &
80x300 mm glasses from a local glassblower specialised on production of chemical instruments - these range about 70-80 EUR including the grinded glass lids.

For large rays we recently orderer glasses with 300x600 mm.

Problem surely is to find a glassblower who can handle this.

Compared to commercially produced glasses much more expensive, but offers better glass quality (no weathering / corrosion like in soda-lime
glass) and is - compared to plastic drums - still the better option. I compared prices on the SPNHC meeting in Leiden with similar large glass containers from Dixon glass (UK). Our price was 1/3 of the Dixon price.
Even though Dixon offered large ground stopper glasses and "our" glasses are closed "only" with grounded glass planes, this option is very attractive & competitive - regarding price & dimensions of the glass.

Best regards
Dirk

As far as I can tell there is no one out there who is still producing these and there is not enough volume of need from the natural history community to get them back into production. I have contacted our glass supplier (Kols Containers) and they have researched this without any luck. Only 110mm gallon jars available now...
