[Nhcoll-l] Import/export glitches - Part 4 (Canada)

I have just been reminded that when flying out of the following Canadian
airports:

Vancouver
Calgary
Edmonton
Winnipeg
Toronto
Ottawa
Montreal-Trudeau
Halifax Stanfield

You clear Customs and Immigration IN CANADA.

That means that when you arrive in the U.S., even if you are flying into
a designated wildlife port, you are not going to go through Customs upon
arrival and won't have any way of declaring your wildlife import and
having it cleared (and inspected) by USFWS.

There are no USFWS inspectors at these airports and it is highly
unlikely that you would be able to get a designated port exemption for
an airport in Canada because there are no nearby USFWS offices where
there might be someone available to meet you at a nondesignated port.

So IF your import is one that requires a permit (MBTA, ESA, CITES, MMPA,
Lacey Act), then your options are:

a) ship
b) if you have a very good relationship with the inspectors at your
nearby designated wildlife port, ask if they will meet you upon arrival
in the U.S. to clear/inspect your shipment
c) have Customs clear the shipment and then immediately, without opening
the box, arrange to have it re-cleared and inspected by a USFWS Law
Enforcement inspector in an office near you
d) request a designated wildlife port exemption for one of the Canadian
border ports and drive across:

*Canadian Border Ports*

You may use the following ports to import or export wildlife (including
parts or products) whose origin is Canada or the United States. You may
not use these ports if the wildlife requires a permit under 50 CFR Part
