[Nhcoll-l] 2014 marks centenary of extinction of the PassengerPigeon

Joel Greenberg, in his forthcoming book, will present what I believe are two of the only photos taken outside of captivity.  My understanding is that these are new finds from the past and haven't previously been published.

I'm no expert on photography but was it really common prior to the Civil War? I also wonder if contemporaneous illustrations aren't considered as valid as photographs? Again, no expertise claimed, and of course I realize an illustrator could just as easily embellish or alter as much as we can with photoshop today. Still, if that's the only visual record we have, should it be disregarded? Is it that unreliable?
