The American Museum of Natural History in New York has current openings for TWO positions in fieldwork support and collections management associated with its Explore21 initiative. Explore21 supports innovative and high-impact exploratory fieldwork and associated collections-based research and curation. The two open positions will provide support to the program by assisting both field and laboratory activities, including support for collections curation.

Both positions are described below; both are full-time, term (January 1, 2014 –June 30, 2015) with possibility of renewal.

Job Title #1:  Curatorial Associate (Explore21)

Number of Openings:  1

Responsibilities & Duties:

Oversee management of fieldwork program under Explore21 initiative; coordinate fieldwork projects among PIs across divisions, institutions; work with PIs on planning, scheduling, travel logistics, purchasing, staff assignments, permits, shipping, import/export arrangements. Supervise daily activities of Curatorial Assistants. Work with respective division staff on curation of incoming collections, facilitate collections usage, provision of data resources. Supervise collections informatics program for resulting collections, coordinate with curators and curatorial associates, collections staff on deployment, data management, user support.

Qualifications:

The ideal candidate will have previous experience in planning and conducting major multi-person international fieldwork activities, collections management and/or curatorial and research experience relevant to one or more of the disciplines represented at AMNH; excellent organizational and intrapersonal skills. Previous experience with collections informatics software, data entry and digitization is desired; Ph.D. in natural sciences required.

Job Title #2:  Curatorial Assistant (Explore21)

Number of Openings:  1

Responsibilities & Duties:

Assist fieldwork program under Explore21 initiative; assist in the care and management of specimen collections resulting from Explore21 fieldwork; process incoming material, ensure proper fixation & preservation, process tissues and subsampling, coordinate with lab sequencing efforts &  final deposition AMCC; assist with taxonomic determinations; work with respective division staff on collections informatics activities.

Qualifications:

The ideal candidate will have previous experience in collections care, curation and/or curatorial and taxonomic experience relevant to one or more of the disciplines represented at AMNH; excellent organizational and intrapersonal skills. Previous experience with fieldwork, collections informatics software, databasing, data entry and image processing is desired; B.S./B.A. in natural sciences required.
